What Time of Year is Best to See Killer Whales?

The best time of year to see killer whales, also known as orcas, can vary depending on the specific type of orca population you want to encounter and their migratory patterns. In general, there are two main types of killer whales observed in different seasons:

Resident Killer Whales

Resident Killer Whales are found in the coastal waters of the Pacific Northwest, including British Columbia and Washington State. Killer Whales primarily feed on fish, especially salmon. The best time to see resident Killer Whales is typically from spring to fall, particularly during the peak whale watching season from June to September. During this period, there is a higher chance of encountering resident orcas, and they tend to stay closer to the coastal regions.

Transient Killer Whales

Transient Killer Whales are known for their predatory behavior and primarily feed on marine mammals, such as seals, sea lions, and porpoises. Unlike resident Killer Whales, transients can be observed in the area throughout the year. Therefore, you have a chance to see transient orcas during any season, depending on their presence and hunting patterns.

Whale sightings, including Killer Whales, are subject to various factors, including weather conditions, prey availability, and the natural movement of the animals. While the mentioned periods provide the best opportunities for seeing killer whales in their natural habitats, wildlife encounters can never be guaranteed.
